"I'm not saying I'd want to build a summer home here..."

So, winter has arrived to Hawai'i.

It's now a whole 3 degrees cooler in the daytime--night time temps are about the same. Brrrrr. No, really, I guess with the wind and the shorter duration of the tropical sun beating down, it is a bit cooler...sometimes by 10 whole degrees.

It doesn't seem like a big difference to me, having grown up in a slightly more temperate zone of northernCalifornia where it would, but only occasionally, get over 100 degrees or drop below freezing. Maybe as I spend more time here, I might get a bit more sensitive to the temperature changes and need to wear a cute crocheted hat, turtleneck and Uggs like I see some here once November comes around.

What has changed is how much more of a green thumb I have now that the rainy season is here (well to be accurate, bluish grayish color with just a tinge of black)...yep, I didn't know how talented I was in the cultivation of mold, mildew and other such moisture-loving fungi. Just the other day, I noticed that a beautiful yellow mushroom sprouted up in a livingroom houseplant's container.

I thought for a while that my room was just getting darker, or I needed to wash my glasses, but upon closer inspection, the lovely little fuzzy stuff was spreading across the ceiling and onto clothes. It especially loves leather and the Hawaiian style woven baskets I used to keep my craft items in (Long's plastic storage boxes enter stage left). Even jewelry and books cannot escape it.

Partly, it is due to the proximity to the rain forest (I'd say 1/4 mile or so) since they are moisture-loving growths to be sure.

Partly it's due to my lack of using things--apparently, vampires and mold have a common bond in that they tend to go "poof" in the light of day, so maybe I should have made Christmas cards to send to you all afterall...

And, if I'm honest, partly due to my "make a pathway" approach to cleaning, tossing things into corners and the like so I have a direct path to bed.

In response to this invasion, I've purged some things--"Clean Sweep" would be proud--cleaned some things, and decided that I need use more of my stuff or toss it.

Now, where did I put that leather bustier? I think I'll wear it to the farmer's market....
